Roads rehab excites people in Karonga
Residents in Karonga District are all smiles following the rehabilitation of feeder roads and water drainages around the town.
Karonga Main Market chairperson Goodwin Ghambi said the maintenance of the drainage will address perennial water floods that affect vendors during the rainy season.
He said: “For a long time, vendors have struggled to deal with floods that affect their stalls. In most occasions, vendors could not operate from their normal stalls, which led to business losses.

“With the maintenance works, business will not be disrupted.”
Ghambi thanked the council for implementing the project, saying it will motivate vendors to pay market fees.
Taxi operator Simon Sikumbawa said the council should also provide them with a designated car park to enhance revenue collection.
He said: “The development is good in the sense that motorists will save time and money for vehicle maintenance as driving on bad roads was damaging our cars.
“However, the council should construct a modern car park because operators just park anywhere, making it difficult for the council to collect parking fees.”
One of the residents, Enala Khomba said a good road network is crucial for development.
“Karonga is a big town which deserves good roads. We thank the council for the project,” she said.
Khoma also tipped the council to partner organisations to mount billboards at the roundabout for advertisement as another source of revenue.
On his part, Karonga District Council spokesperson George Mponda said the K77 million project seeks to prevent flooding around Karonga Town and improve sanitation.
He said: “We are using K77 million from the District Development Fund.
“However, the project has faced challenges such as scarcity of fuel and the breakdown of an excavator.”
