NGO supports children with disabilities in Mchinji

Parents of Disabled Children Association of Malawi (Podcam) says it is committed to supporting children with disabilities in Mchinji District.

Since last year, the organisation has been supporting children with disabilities to reduce the challenges they face in their academic journey.

Among others, the organisation facilitates the treatment of children with visual impairment and those with walking disabilities.

Podcam project officer Chikondi Mwale Chitaukali said in an interview on Saturday that they facilitated eye surgeries for children with visual impairment at Nkhoma Mission Hospital in Lilongwe.

“This a vital step in ensuring that children receive the healthcare services they need for a quality life,” she said.

Eneless Lyson from Traditional Authority (T/A) Mnduwa, whose daughter received treatment through the Tikuma project, said her 15-year-old daughter Elita was born blind but was operated on at Nkhoma Mission Hospital.

“My daughter, who is in Standard Five at Chimwankhuku Primary School, has regained her eyesight after years of disability, marking a significant milestone not just for her but for the family as well,” she said.

Elita herself expressed

her joy at being able to help her mother with household chores.

“School was difficult for me. But now that I can see, everything is easy,” she said.

Another parent, Rosalia Kaphambale, from T/A Dambe also thanked the organisation for planning to take her daughter Madalo, 15, to hospital to get her wound treated.

She said: “My daughter has a wound on her leg which makes it difficult for her to walk to school.

“However, the organisation says it will help her to get treated so she can attend classes at Kadakatali Primary School without problems.”

With funding from the Norwegian Development Aid through Save the Children, Podcam is implementing the five-year project in T/As Mnduwa, Simphasi and Dambe in Mchinji District.
