NGOs support children with down syndrome

Centre for Down Syndrome, Autism and Sickle Cell Anaemia (Cedossa) and Sikhalo Foundation have emphasised the importance of having more specialised teachers to support such children in schools.

Speaking on Saturday during the commemoration of World Down Syndrome Day in Chinsapo in Lilongwe, Cedossa executive director Lauryn Sulani said investing in teacher training is essential to ensure children with down syndrome receive quality education.

She said: “We ask stakeholders to prioritise special needs education to produce more teachers who can handle children with down syndrome.

“Every child deserves access to education that supports their unique abilities.”

Sulani expressed concern with some parents who neglect their children due to stigma. She urged them to embrace and nurture their children.

“Children with down syndrome are valuable members of our communities. They deserve to be loved, respected and given the opportunity to reach their full potential,” said Sulani.

She also hinted at Cedossa’s plans to open a home for children with down syndrome.

On his part, Sikhalo Foundation officer Henry Mtunga said there is need to promote awareness about the rights of people with down syndrome.

He noted that shortage of special needs teachers is a significant challenge to ensure these children can exercise their right to education.

A parent, Chimwemwe Santos thanked the two organisations for supporting children with down syndrome.

She agreed with the call for more specialised teachers and urged fellow parents to show love towards their children with down syndrome.

Down syndrome, which is caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21, affects cognitive development and physical features.

World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21, seeks to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of people with down syndrome.
