Mzimba residents decry crime

Mzimba Boma residents have expressed concern with a spate of criminal activities targeting homes during day and night.

In random interviews with victims, they said they have lost valuables such as television sets, bags of maize, home theatres and mattresses during the past two months.

Silence Chirambo, a resident of Mabushi Location, who is also the district’s chief irrigation officer, said robbers raided his home and went away with a plasma television set.

He said: “I do not understand how it happened. I was fast asleep only to wake up in the morning to find my television set gone.

“The robbers also stole other items, including bags of maize and utensils.”

Chirambo said he tried in vain to search for the goods.

“We believe there are criminal gangs that are operating in the district and we appeal to police to tighten security in the area,” he said.

Another resident of Mabushi who refused to have her name disclosed said she lost an entire kraal of chicken after thieves attacked her home.

“It seems they are targeting homes and they usually carry out their acts during day because this happened when I was away at work,” she said.

Mzimba Police Station spokesperson Maria Banda said people should report cases of crime to police.

“Our files show that the only people who reported cases of break-ins were those from Chikunsa and Chanthomba. There is no report from Mabushi,” she said.

Banda said police will investigate the crimes to restore law and order
