Nice Trust for compost manure production

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has encouraged people of Traditional Authority (T/A) Chisovya in Rumphi District to start making manure in readiness for the forthcoming crop growing season.

Speaking on Wednesday in Ng’onga when Nice Trust met communities to assess challenges hampering successful implementation of the country’s development plan, the Malawi 2063, lead farmer, Janet Manda said the pillar of agriculture productivity and commercialisation, seems unrealistic with ever-rising prices of fertiliser on the market.

She said: “We are learning about agriculture productivity as key to future of Malawi’s vision but we have a serious problem with it. We no longer produce enough for our families nor for commercial purposes.

“This is due to exorbitant prices of chemical fertiliser on the market, currently at around K70 000 per 50 kilogramme bag.”

However, Ng’onga area civic education coordinator Lameck Mkandawire urged people to begin producing compost fertiliser to cut on costs of chemical fertilisers.

Nice Trust Rumphi district civic education officer Freecy Mapanga agreed with Mkandawire, saying the community must start producing organic manure if they are to increase crop production.

“It’s high time people started preparing enough compost manure right now than relying on imported chemical fertilisers.

“We can increase production if we embrace the use of organic manure in our farms,” she said.

Nice Trust deepens democracy and good governance through provision of civic education and networking, among others.
