NICO targets mining, agriculture in new strategy

NICO Holdings Plc says it will deepen its investments in mining, agriculture and manufacturing under a new corporate strategy set to take effect in January 2027 after achieving most of the targets under its current five-year plan.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Blantyre on Monday, NICO Group managing director Vizenge Kumwenda said the group had already met most of the objectives it had set for the period ending December 2026 by the close of 2025.

He attributed the performance to the group’s One NICO strategy, saying it enabled the business to remain resilient despite foreign exchange shortages, high inflation and global economic uncertainty.

“Our new strategy will focus on sectors that are critical to Malawi’s economic transformation, including mining, manufacturing and agriculture,” said Kumwenda.

He said the group’s banking and life insurance businesses remained the main drivers of growth, while strategic investments in agriculture and mining continued to support the country’s economy.

NICO reported a profit after tax of K234.8 billion for the year ended December 2025, excluding revaluation gains, representing an 87 percent increase from K125.5 billion recorded in 2024.

The group also announced a total profit of K346.2 billion for 2025, reflecting strong growth from the previous year’s performance, and said it had strengthened its market position to become one of the country’s leading corporate brands.

Among its recent investments, NICO, through NBS Bank Plc, provided a $11.6 million working capital facility to Lindian Resources Limited, led sponsorship of the 2025 Malawi Mining Investment Forum and extended its agricultural finance partnership with Rabobank of the Netherlands to 2030.

One of the shareholders, William Matewere, welcomed the group’s performance, saying the results demonstrate that the company continues to create value for investors while contributing to Malawi’s economic development.
