Nigeria being monitored

FAM has asked the Flames caretaker coaching panel to monitor Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the ongoing Confederations Cup in Brazil.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu was responding to a question on whether there is a plan to keep an eye on the Super Eagles ahead of the 2014 World Cup final round qualifier against the Flames in September.

The development is a hint that the Eddington Ng’onamo-led coaching panel, whose initial three-game tenure ended last week, is being considered for continuation.

“We are in touch with Eddie [Ng’onamo] and we have encouraged them to monitor Nigeria, so that they should not be caught off-guard in the event that the executive board decides to maintain them,” said Nyamilandu.

He also said consultations on the future of the vacant Flames coaching panel, are still in progress.

Ng’onamo could not be reached for comment, but one of his deputies, Ernest Mtawali, confirmed that they are closely keeping an eye on the Super Eagles.

The African champions thrashed Tahiti 6-1 on Monday and they will take on Uruguay in their second game tomorrow before winding up their group matches with a tie against Spain on Sunday.

Mtawali and Nyamilandu admitted that the Confederations Cup will help the Super Eagles to tune up for the decider against the Flames.
