Mighty Wanderers launched a dream for a double after silencing Moyale Barracks with a 2-0 defeat at Balaka Stadium on Sunday to climb second on 40 points, one behind faltering TNM Super League leaders Red Lions.

Mike Kaziputa and Diverson Chilemba’s fifth and 25th minute goals extended the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy kings’ unbeaten league second round run to four games.

“We have five games to go and we will be treating one game at a time,” the Nomads team manager Chiyembekezo Zidana said before his team’s 23rd match, which is one game less than the Lions who drew 2-2 with Epac at Silver Stadium.

The Lions lost 2-0 to Mafco on Saturday. On Sunday they relied on Kumbukani Mwambene’s brace which ensured that he caught up with Epac’s Ishmael Thindwa as leading scorers on 12 goals.

On the other end, Musa Manyenje bagged a double for the 10th-placed Epac, who have 31 points from 22 games.

Still in Lilongwe, Azam Tigers remained eighth on 35 points from 24 games after suffering their first second round 3-1 defeat at the hands of spirited rookies Mponela United. The Kau Kau boys had drawn 0-0 with Civo United the previous day.

Mponela hit the target through Clement Trota, Massa Ngulube and Jack Chiona to render insignificant Vincent Nyangulu’s lone goal for Tigers. Mponela are still third from the bottom on 23 points from 23 games.
