Mighty Mukuru Wanderers midfielder Isaac ‘Chair’ Kaliati on Saturday enjoyed the spotlight at the 2024 Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Entertainers of the Year Awards presentation ceremony after bagging two accolades.
He claimed both the Sports personality and the Football Player of the Year awards to emerge the biggest winner in the sports category during a colourful event at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.
United States of America (USA)-based Scorchers’ striker Temwa Chawinga emerged Best Women’s Football Player of the Year while United Kingdom (UK)-based Malawi Queens shooter Joyce Mvula was named the Best Netball Player of the Year.
In team awards, Wanderers grabbed the Best Men’s Football Team of the Year while Salima Sugar National Netball Tournament champions Blue Eagles were the best in netball.
Kaliati was not available for comment yesterday, but he recently described his nomination for the awards as a blessing.
The awards’ organising committee chairperson Chisomo Mwamadi said the sports accolades were among the 51 honours, 27 of which were presented on stage and 24 to be collected at MBC offices.
MBC director general George Kasakula said the Entertainers of the Year Awards are an important platform to celebrate and reward local talent.
“The awards aim to reward talent based on both popularity and performance. It reflects what Malawians believe entertained them the most in 2024,” he said.
