Girls in Ntchisi District have urged government to enact the abortion law in their quest to access sexual and reproductive health services.

The call was made on Friday at Kakhuta Youth Centre in Traditional Authority Kalumo in the district when Ladder for Rural Development (Laford) organised a one-day training for girls on human rights and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services.

In an interview, LivinesiChisenga, a participant, said the training was an eye-opener.

“After learning about our rights, we, therefore, demand comprehensive SRH services and the passing of Termination of Pregnancy Bill in Parliament,” she said.

In his remarks, Laford executive director Godfrey Kam’munda said they wanted to take the participants through structural causes of violence against young women and girls and promote effective response mechanisms for victims.

“During the training, we learned that the girls want comprehensive SRHR services. They have also asked policy-makers and government to protect their health rights by having a conducive environment and laws that promote their health rights,” he said.

Laford is implementing the project with financial support from Amplify Change.
