Nursing students from various colleges in the Northern Region on Saturday walked from Mzuzu to Ekwendeni to raise funds for buying medical equipment for Rumphi District Hospital maternity ward.

The students’ team leader Steven Smart said they embarked on the initiative to assist government in reducing maternal and neo-natal deaths at the hospital.

“While we were conducting our practical lessons at the hospital, we noticed that it does not have enough medical equipment. We, therefore, found it imperative to source funds and purchase these items,” he said.

Smart said the support demonstrates to other college students in other regions of the country the heart giving.

“We are not stopping here, we will do the same for other hospitals such as Ekwendeni and Mzuzu Central. We are sure that other students in different colleges will emulate this example,” he said.

Out of the big walk, the students raised K500 000 from the K3 million they targeted to secure for the hospital.

Rumphi District Hospital public relations officer Bwanalori Mwamlima welcomed the initiative, saying it will go a long way in reducing  the equipment gaps at the hospital.

“We receive many patients from various places, hence the need for more medical equipment. We thank the students for the gesture and it is our hope that others will emulate the gesture,” he said. n
