Nya Uyu grows out of the comic box
The art of comedy often calls on one to act beyond normal limits to grab people’s attention.
There are other eyes that only see the dumb aspect of the craft, not the wit and talent one is showcasing. This stereotype dismisses the venture and negative tag comedians attract.

The audience has often failed to distinguish the stage characters such as Mr Bean and Charly Chaplin from their alter-egos.
Last week, renowned comedian- cum-event host Nya Uyu, real name Felistus Ngwira, was unveiled as the brand ambassador for new betting company Zonse Lotto.
It appeared what elated her most is the triumph she had achieved by forcing her way out of the cage to receive the endorsement against all odds stuck against comedians.
Nya Uyu said although they are often sidelined because of the nature of their art, comedy alleviates the stress.
“My appointment as a brand ambassador means growth. This is not only for me, but the entertainment sector. People often do not look at us as serious people,” she told Chill in an interview.
The Lilongwe-based artist is the brains behind the popular online entertainment show Mijedo Corner. Nya Uyu said the show is subjected to undue classification.
She said: “Owing to its name, the show has been wrongly adjudged as a gossip platform. It is just a name and a show that has helped shape the narrative to promote art.”
Nya Uyu said venturing into comedy was not by chance as she has always enjoyed making people laugh.
“I would say comedy found me! I have been naturally funny and enjoyed making people laugh. As allows me to express myself, connect with new audiences and build a more sustainable brand.”
Of late, the artist has solidified her footprints as an event host. Recently, she hogged the limelight when she hosted the State of the Nation Address presidential youth engagement in Mzuzu.
Nya Uyu said another challenge was to stay original and fresh in a crowded comedy space.
She said: “The ever-changing tastes and preferences of audiences can be daunting. However, these challenges also drive one to innovate and push boundaries. Seeing people happy inspires my work. I’m also driven by the desire to push creative boundaries, challenge myself and make a meaningful difference in the world.”
In a separate interview, art enthusiast and commentator Sam Chiwaka said to earn corporate recognition requires a lot of investment.
He said companies consider many things when they want to work with someone.
“You will always have to maintain a clean image both in public and private. One’s conduct is crucial. You need to have an image that inspires confidence and scandal-free,” said Chiwaka.
