Nyago takes Vimbuza sounds to Tanzania
Ethno-centric musician Nyago is among African artists to participate in the regional art platform Nafasi Art Space.
She is expected to perform on Friday at the event in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania after her application was successful.
In an interview from Dar es Salaam yesterday, Nyago said she was surprised with her selection, but she believes her authenticity made the difference.
“It is amazing being here. I feel overwhelmingly grateful and I thank God for this privilege. The feeling is so humbling,” she said.
Nyago is known for her unique music which is inspired by a cultural dance Vimbuza, common in the Northern Region. She described herself as a spiritual healer who was called by her ancestors to send across messages to people.
She said: “When I am out of my house I represent my family. When I am out of my village, I represent my clan and when I am out of my country, I represent Malawi. So, people should expect ancestors to manifest.”
The Nafasi Art Space is domesticated in Dar es Salaam where contemporary visual and performing artists come together to learn, inspire, exhibit and perform.
According to their website www.nafasiartspace.org, the space hosts over 30 artists within their 37 studios and exhibition spaces.
“The platform also offers regular programmes including trainings, workshops, art talks, film screenings, exhibitions, concerts, festivals and public fairs. The Malawian artist is expected to be among the African artists to benefit from the art platform this year,” it says.
The studios, which are converted from old shipping containers, are used to paint, produce music, weave, sculpt and more.
