One on one with Gabadinho Mhango

Gabadinho: I attended trials at three different clubs

Football sensation Gabadinho Mhango (Gaba) is, unquestionably, one of  the best natural forwards on the domestic scene—that cheeky body swerve, balance and poise,  wonderful acceleration and classic natural goals. Recently, the Big Bullets talisman underwent trials at three South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) sides. He returned home on Wednesday without being offered a deal. Garry Chirwa (GC) had a chat with him on his Rainbow Nation foray.

GC: We are hearing different stories about how your trials went, we want to get it from the horse’s mouth. How did it go?

Gaba: I attended trials at three different clubs. My first destination was Amazulu where I did extremely well, scoring four goals in five matches and even the coach was impressed with my performance and he recommended to the club’s management that I be signed. My agent also informed me about it and I was very excited. However, later on my agent told me they couldn’t agree on the terms and that I had to move on to Bloemfontein Celtic.

GC: Were the trials at Celtic prearranged and what happened?

Gaba: After the talks between my agent and Celtic fell through, I got a call from Limbikani Mzava that their [Celtic] coach wanted to have a look at me and that they had already been in touch with me, that is how I found myself there. I also did very well and scored a goal in my first trial match against Amazulu.

GC: Now if Celtic were impressed as well, then how did you find yourself at Free State Stars?

Gaba: Well, the impression I got from my agent was Free State already had an offer and I was going there to discuss the terms and sign a contract, but surprisingly, when I reached there, they told me I would have to undergo trials. To be honest, I was put off. In fact, they couldn’t even feature me during training and it was quite a frustrating spell. To add to that, I just didn’t like the environment at Free State.

GC: So, you mean if they had offered you an outright contract, you could not have agreed?

Gaba: I don’t think so. I just had a negative attitude of the team and the environment. The teams that impressed me were Amazulu and Celtic, if I am to sign, then it should be one of the two clubs.

GC: So, what are the developments now? Is any of the two teams ready to sign you?

Gaba: Negotiations with Amazulu have been revived. My manager has informed me that they want to sign me on loan. The reason  I came back was Immigration authorities gave me a period of up to July 31. But I am very hopeful that I should be returning once my agent, Amazulu management and Bullets agree the terms.

GC: Did you miss Bullets and the limelight you enjoy on the local scene?

Gaba: Not at all. My focus was on the trials, I did not miss Bullets.
