Afro-pop musician Onesimus says his recent tour of the United Kingdom (UK) has shown him that he can do and achieve more as an artist.

The composer and singer undertook a number of events during his time in the UK, including an appearance on BBC1 Extra’s Destination Africa radio programme hosted by DJ Edu, popularly known as Afro-beats boss.

In an interview yesterday, the Nobody hit maker said the platform has opened up new opportunities for his artistic ambitions.

During the interview with BBC, Onesimus shared insights on his recently released eight-track extended play (EP) Love And Dreams which was also featured on the programme.

“There are fewer platforms which are bigger than this one. As an artist who is aiming to have a stake in the global artistic conversation, this opportunity was perfect for me. I needed to share my dream with the world so that people can appreciate what we are doing as Malawians,” he said.

During his stay in the UK, the artist also performed at the Malawi Achievers Awards in Nottingham on December 3 while on December 10, he performed at a charity event dubbed Daughters of Nyasa in Coventry at an event at Truth Bar which was supported by BBC 1 Extra.

Onesimus said he was pleased with the support he received from Malawians based in UK and the reception that his EP has received.

The artist also recorded a song with one of the prominent Malawian artists in UK, Lavida Loca.

Former media personality and artists manager Peter Makossah, who is based in UK, said Onesimus has a bigger chance of breaking into the international market because of the touch in his music and the strength of his compositions.

He said: “His writing skills are good. His songs are short and catchy. He is one of the artists with a good management team and that can tell by the vision he has as an artist. He has a clear idea of what he wants to do.”

The Destination Africa radio programme is one platform that is dedicated to promoting African music. Some of the continental music heavyweights that have featured on the programme before include Burna Boy, Davido and Wiz Kid. Locally, musician Faith Mussa also featured on the platform which he credited for the exposure that saw him being booked for gigs in various countries in Europe and Africa.
