Malawi Government-sponsored Civil Sporting Club (Civo) is set to get K250 million from the K22.2 billion Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) allocation for the 2022/23 financial year to cater for its operations and infrastructure maintenance.

Public Appointments Committee of Parliament chairperson Joyce Chitsulo announced this on Tuesday in her report on allocations for the Public Appointments and Commissions, Statutory Corporations and State Enterprises during a cluster meeting.

Reads the committee’s report in part: “The budget for OPC has seen a significant increase from K12.3 billion in the 2021/22 financial year to a proposed K22.2 billion in 2022/23 financial year.

“The huge jump is on account of an extra K9 billion for Post Cyclone Idai Recovery, K250 million for Civo Sporting Club and K1 billion for the purchase of motor vehicles for ministers and deputy ministers, former presidencts and principal secretaries,”

Civo general secretary Ronald Chiwaula said the funds are handled and managed by the OPC  and, as such, he could not detail the breakdown or expenditure.

He said: “As a club, we get direction from OPC.  The money is not only for the club, but general maintenance of the infrastructures at the club, including the stadium.

“But I am not qualified to speak on the allocation as that is handled and managed by OPC.”

Chiwaula could also not say how much was allocated to the club last year, saying that is at the discretion of the OPC.

Principal Secretary, Department of Human Resource Management and Development Dickson Chunga was not available for comment.

Apart from Civo and its reserve side, OPC also sponsors Civonets Netball Club.

TNM Super League teams with sound sponsorship get annual allocation averaging K150 million.

In a related development, Civo has announced that  they are negotiating for a kit sponsorship deal with firm and once the deal is done they will announce the news.

Once the deal materialises, they will join Kamuzu Barracks, who are the only team in the Central Region to have signed a kit sponsorship deal with Zamm Investments Group.
