Opposition intensifies electoral alliance talks

Five opposition parties represented in Parliament have stepped up talks towards forming an electoral alliance to boost their chances of winning the September 16 2025 General Election.

The parties are Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), UTM Party, United Democratic Front (UDF), People’s Party and Alliance for Democracy (Aford), according to DPP secretary general Peter Mukhitho.

Speaking in an interview during a political rally in Kasungu on Saturday, Mukhito said his party has already engaged UTM, UDF, PP and Aford to form the electoral alliance.

He expressed optimism that forming an alliance would be the best way to boot out the now disintegrated Tonse Alliance led by Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Said Mukhito: “DPP has all the means and powers to go solo, but we believe that in unity there is strength. So, currently, we are discussing with UTM Party, Aford, UDF and PP to make sure that this government must go.

“All we want is to liberate Malawians because currently we are suffering. Malawi has never suffered as we have witnessed now.”

In a separate interview yesterday, Aford spokesperson Annie Maluwa, whose party alongside UTM and PP were in the Tonse Alliance that dislodged the DPP in the June 2020 court-sanctioned fresh presidential election, confirmed that her party is in talks with DPP and other opposition political parties.

“It is true, we have been discussing this issue of possible alliance since last year, considering the 50+1,” she said.

But UTM Party spokesperson Felix Njawala and PP SG Ben Chakhame, while confirming engaging in talks for an electoral alliance, could not disclose that DPP is among the parties they are discussing with.

Njawala in an interview said his party has not yet started any discussions with DPP for possible alliance, saying UTM is “very cautious with electoral alliances”.

He said: “We have been in an alliance before, and we know how that alliance behaved. So we are very cautious this time around. We want to go into an alliance that will give opportunity to UTM to implement its manifesto as well.”

On her part, MCP spokesperson Jessie Kabwila is on record as having said her party has not discussed any issue to do with an electoral alliance.

Malawi will go to the polls on September 16 2025 to elect a President, 229 members of Parliament and 460-plus ward councillors.
