Paramount Kyungu lobbies support for flood survivors

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Chitipa and Karonga districts has asked well-wishers to help flood survivors at Mwahimba Mwakifwamba Evacuation Camp in Karonga District with relief items to lessen their suffering.

The chief made the call on Friday at the camp when Lotus Resources Africa donated food and nonfood items to 128 households affected by floods.

The items included 40 mattresses, cooking pots, maize, cooking oil, buckets, mosquito nets and soya pieces.

Said Kyungu: “On behalf of my fellow traditional leaders and the people of Karonga, I commend the company for the swift response to help the

 survivors.

“However, I ask other well-wishers, including government to also come in with help as these people need more food and nonfood items to rebuild their homes.”

On his part, the company’s senior community liaison officer Robert Silungwe said

the donation was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility and was the response to an appeal which Mwahimba Development Network made through the district council.

One of the beneficiaries, Grace Mwangomba was all smiles after receiving a mattress, a mosquito net, maize, soya pieces, soap and cooking oil.

Camp chairperson Boston Mwamlima described the initiative as a timely intervention, saying the camp was facing erratic food supply.

“We need sanitary facilities for girls and water guard. We also need recovery materials to enable more than 22 households whose houses were damaged to rebuild their homes,” he said.

Karonga district commissioner Willard Mwambo assured the survivors of government’s continued support.

He said: “We thank our development partner, when Lotus Resources Africa for this rapid response which has come at the right time.

“However, we appeal to other partners to help us with recovery materials for infrastructure development when we decommissioning this camp.”
