Parliament has confirmed the appointment of chartered accountant Thomas Makiwa as Auditor General to fill the gap left by his predecessor Stephenson Kamphasa in June 2018.

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Sosten Gwengwe yesterday moved a motion in Parliament to confirm Makiwa, whom President Lazarus Chakwera appointed last week.

Supporting the confirmation, Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee chairperson Joyce Chitsulo said they found the appointment to be in compliance with the legal framework for the appointment of an Auditor General.

She said: “For us as a committee, it’s a good development. We really wanted someone substantive for the position. This is good news for the country.

“We assessed the appointment and realised that the candidate has the right qualifications and experience for the position. So, as a committee, we didn’t hesitate but support his appointment.”

On his part, Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda said having an Auditor General in office strengthens the country’s governance structures as he ensures prudence in the use of resources.

Makiwa was born on January 4 1977 and has been acting in that position for the past five years.

The University of Malawi bachelor of accountancy graduate qualified as chartered accountant in 2004 and became a fellow in 2009. In the same year, he was accepted as a member of the Malawi Accountants Board through the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi.

In 2010, Makiwa obtained a master of science in finance with a distinction from Coventry University in the United Kingdom.

He has 22 years experience having started his career as an accountant at Mwanza District Hospital and later worked at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre.

In November 2013, he became the Accountant General before he was deployed to National Audit Office as Deputy Auditor General in October 2015 and later served as acting Auditor General from June 2018 to July 2020. He resumed the same position in January 2021.
