Pasuwa, Mponda get clubs’ approval

FCB Nyasa Bullets and Silver Strikers have given their coaches Kallisto Pasuwa and Peter Mponda respectively, the green light to be part of the Flames’ interim technical panel.

This follows a Football Association of Malawi (FAM) decision to appoint Pasuwa as interim head coach with Mponda and Pritchard Mwansa of Moyale Barracks as his assistants to oversee the remaining 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Burundi and Burkina Faso. The fixtures will be of academic interest as the Flames are already out of  contention, having lost all their four matches so far.

However, the association made the announcement without finalising consultations with the two clubs, according to the TNM Super League giants.

To head coaching panel: Pasuwa

The association only wrote Bullets and Silver on Monday and got their responses yesterday.

Silver chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba confirmed having received the letter from FAM on Monday.

He said though they had reservations about the association’s conduct of announcing the appointment before consulting them, they had decided to release Mponda.

He said: “As Silver Strikers, we have decided to allow Mr Mponda to temporarily take up the position of Malawi National Football Team assistant coach.”

His Bullets counterpart Albert Chigoga also said they had released Pasuwa following an approval by the club’s board.

Moyale Barracks already released Mwansa.

But FAM general secretary Alfred Gunda in an interview yesterday insisted that they did not jump the gun by announcing the appointments.

He said:“There were conversations at high level before we announced. Remember, it’s an offer of employment and that process involves negotiations with the clubs as well.”

The Flames anchor Group L with no point after losses to Burundi, Burkina Faso and twice to Senegal.

Group leaders Burkina Faso’s Stallions and Senegal’s Teranga Lions, who are tied on 10 points, already punched their tickets to the continental showpiece with two games to spare.

Burundi, who have three points earned from thir 3-2 victory over the Flames, are third.

Pasuwa and Mponda worked together at Bullets for three seasons where Mponda was his assistant
