Patronise pilot voter registration—MEC
M
alawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has appealed to civil society organisations (CSOs) and political parties to sensitise youths and persons with disabilities in Chitipa District to participate in pilot voter registration.
MEC commissioner the Reverend Phillip Kambulire said this in the district on Monday during stakeholders meetings aimed at sensitising CSOs, political parties and religious leaders on the pilot voter registration, which started yesterday and ends today.
He said experience has shown that youths and persons with disabilities do not turn up for the exercise in their large numbers.
“It’s our plea to stakeholders to ensure that youths and persons with disabilities are mobilised so they take part in this exercise because they are also very important. They are the citizens of Malawi and they need to participate in every electoral process,” said Kambulire.
He noted that if youths do not participate in electoral activities, they will not know their responsibility.
“It is good for the youth to participate in whatever we are doing for them to understand their responsibility as citizens of Malawi,” said Kambulire.
Chitipa CSO Network chairperson Patrick Ziba assured MEC that they will sensitise the masses, including the youth and persons with disabilities to participate in the pilot voter registration exercise.
He said youth play a pivotal role in the country; hence, the need for them to take a leading role in the exercise.
On his part, Sheikh Mambo of Chitipa Mosque thanked MEC for engaging religious leaders.
“We are going to sensitise our members to participate in the pilot voter registration exercise,” he said.
MEC has procured 6 500 election management devices in readiness for the September 16 2025 General Elections.
