M’Mbelwa District Council principal environmental officer James Pelani has urged people in Mzimba to keep the environment clean to prevent diseases.

He said this on Friday at Mzimba Boma when he led residents in a clean-up exercise.

“Clean-up exercises help to make our environment conducive for living. We want people to live in a better environment where they will be free from diseases,” said Pelani.

He said the council will conduct the clean-up exercises once every month.

A student at Mzimba Business College, Ephraim Songa warned people against littering.

“We should strive to live in a good environment. It saddens me that some people continue to drop leftovers such as banana and sugarcane peels everywhere. That’s being a bad citizen. Let’s all work together to achieve clean townships,” he said.

Mzimba Civil Society Organisations Network chairperson Christopher Melele commended residents for coming out to clean various areas, saying they should learn to take care of the environment.

He said people should embrace clean-up exercises as part of their everyday life undertakings.

The clean-up exercises also took place in trading centres such as Euthini, Jenda, Emfeni, Kafukule, Edingeni and other places, including markets and townships.

President Lazarus Chakwera launched the National Clean-Up Exercise in 2020 for people in the country to take care of the environment.

Among others, the clean-up campaign will prevent the further spread of the cholera outbreak, which has so far claimed 1 778 lives in the country since March 2022.
