If I were

Peter Mutharika

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would realise that it was refreshing to spice up the inauguration of the Masauko Chipembere Highway third phase with some light-hearted sarcasm of ‘Nilibe pulobulemu’ (I have no problems) borrowed from Zambia’s Dalisoul and Magigi’s hit song-aimed at critics.

Nevertheless, I would appreciate that the best way to silence my critics is to address the social and economic problems that have rocked the country.

If only I were APM, I would prove my critics wrong by ensuring that there is no shortage of drugs in hospitals, that people are not being forced to spend sleepless nights at Admarc depots to access maize and it is only then that I can be sarcastic and say ‘nilibe pulobulemu’.

Oh yes! If I were His Excellency, I would appreciate that the price of a 50 kilogramme bag of maize is between K15 000 and K20 000–which is  almost equivalent to what some civil servants are paid as salary–and if I would address that problem, then I can confidently say that nilibe pulobulemu.

That is if only I were my President Peter Mutharika of the ‘nilibe pulobulemu’ fame, unfortunately I am not him.
