Phalombe District Council officers under ACB probe

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Martha Chizuma has said they are investigating some officers and members of Phalombe District Council over alleged corrupt practices.

She said this in an interview on Monday after the bureau’s meeting with officers and council members in Phalombe.

“The bureau is indeed investigating different matters at Phalombe District Council such as the recent recruitment of healthcare workers for the newly built Phalombe District Hospital,” said Chizuma.

She said they engaged the officers and members of the council as part of anti-corruption campaign which President Lazarus Chakwera launched in July this year and to appreciate efforts that the council is putting in place to deal with the vice.

“In addition to recruitment matters, the bureau is also probing the council on issues about soliciting money in land disputes, procurement dealings and ghosts’ projects under Constituency Development Fund,” said Chizuma.

In another interview, Phalombe District Council chairperson Bernard Komwa said they want the council to deal with corruption.

“We will ensure that the council works hard to prevent corruption,” he said.

Phalombe East legislator Robert Mwina said the meeting was important as it enlightened authorities on corruption matters.

“It was good that the bureau has enlightened leaders about corruption in the district,” he said.
