Plan Malawi donates to flood survivors

Plan Malawi has donated assorted food and nonfood items to flood survivors at Chimalabanthu Evacuation Centre in Traditional Authority (T/A) Wasambo in Karonga District.

The organisation’s regional manager (North) Atusaye Nyondo said on Sunday that they wanted to alleviate the people’s suffering after losing property to the floods.

He said: “We decided to support the district’s disaster risk management office to reach out to survivors.

“We have also supported seven other evacuation camps with nonfood and food items.”

Nyondo said his organisation has also supported 100 households with hygiene kits.

On his part, Chimalabanthu Evacuation Centre chairperson Shemu Gondwe appealed to well-wishers for further

humanitarian support to the camp’s 345 households.

He also asked for support from other organisations to construct toilets and erect tents at the camp.

“We also have about 45 under-five children who are at risk of contracting malaria as we do not have mosquito nets,” said Gondwe.

Karonga district disaster risk management officer Humphrey Magalasi said at least 200 people are seeking refuge in eight evacuation centres.

He said these people are in dire need of food and nonfood items such as tents, blankets, utensils, mosquito nets, and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.

“The council through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs is also mobilising resources to reach out to the survivors. However, we are outstretched; hence, the appeal to other stakeholders to help,” said Magalasi.
