A group of poets on Saturday donated foodstuffs and assorted items to young inmates at Bvumbwe Prison in Thyolo.

They mobilised themselves through a WhatsApp chat for Mavume a Mlakatuli programme, which Kenneth Khondiwa hosts every Friday evening on Matindi Television.

In an interview, Khondiwa said their gesture was motivated by challenges faced by prisons in the country.

“Artists have a role to play in supporting those in need. We know that some of our fans are in hospitals and prisons and they need our support,” he said.

During the visit, some poets entertained the prisoners with performances.

They included Hudson Chamasowa and Joseph Madzedze aswell as musicians Levitiko and the Three Jews.

Chamasowa of the Zochitika ku Simongoliya fame said the initiative mirrors his belief in sharing the little he has.

Bvumbwe Prison officer- in-charge Evance Phiri thanked the artists for the donation.

“Others should emulate the example and prioritise prisons as we have limited resources,” he said.
