Police in Lilongwe yesterday intensified their sweeping operations in Lilongwe where they arrested 90 people suspected to have been involved in various cases such as robbery and growing Indian hemp.

The Nation yesterday found heavy police presence around the Botanic Gardens near the City Centre and of Lilongwe River banks near Tsoka Market where several people were arrested.

In an interview, Lilongwe Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani said the exercise was part of their routine operations to nab those who are suspected to be terrorising people in the city.

“We have been getting reports of several robbery cases occurring in the areas we targeted at the time people are going to office in the morning. We felt the best time to catch such people is the same morning.

“There are some arrests but we are still working on the reports,” said Mushani.

National police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said 90 people were arrested for various reasons.

“It is true that there is heavy police presence in town. Those Police officers are on sweeping operations and it’s our day-to-day work.

“Others were cultivating Indian hemp and some things have been recovered.

Places where these people have been arrested are Lingadzi Bridge, Dudu where there is bush and near the Parliament Building where there is also a lot of bush,” said Manjolo.
