Police pledge security during elections
Eastern Region Police Commissioner Barbara Mchenga Tsiga has assured people in the region of tight security ahead of the September 16 2025 General Elections.
She said this on Wednesday in Zomba during a regional executive committee meeting aimed at appreciating the challenges the region faced in crime prevention between January and June this year.
Despite noting the strides made in crime reduction from 3 295 in 2023 to 3 204 this year, Tsiga said there was still more to be done in crime prevention, especially next year as people will be going to polls.
“We will intensify patrols and establish dedicated election desks to address emerging security concerns,” she said.
Tsiga further said proactive engagement with political parties and stakeholders will be crucial in preventing electoral violence.
“The goal is to maintain law and order and uphold the democratic values cherished by our society,” she said.
Senior Chief Mlumbe of Zomba agreed with Tsiga, saying unity of purpose among electoral stakeholders in the region will ensure peaceful elections.
The chief said traditional leaders will foster electoral peace before, during and after the elections.
“Together, we have the power to create a safer and more secure electoral environment,” said Mlumbe.
Eastern Region community policing chairperson Dan Phiri called on stakeholders to build on electoral successes through lessons learnt from the previous elections.
“We can refine our strategies and enhance our effectiveness in combating electoral violence,” he said
