Police PROs drilled in gender mainstreaming

Eastern Region Police Commissioner Chikondi Cham’bwinja Chingadza has urged police spokespersons to have knowledge and skills in gender mainstreaming.

She said this on Wednesday in Zomba during the opening of a five-day gender mainstreaming training workshop for public relations officers (PROs) and radio professionals in the Malawi Police Service.

Chingadza observed that the PROs are the bridge between the police and communities and they play a pivotal role in shaping public perception.

“Gender-based violence remains one of the most pressing challenges in our society which needs accurate communication from the police to be addressed,” she said.

Kanengo Police Station deputy spokesperson Linly Mwale said the training will empower them to communicate effectively in reducing gender related-crimes.

“The skills gained will help us to respond to these issues with sensitivity, professionalism and commitment to justice,” said Mwale.

Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare principal gender and development officer Goodson Jumbe said the skills will enhance the PROs professional capabilities
