Care Malawi donates to flood survivors

Care Malawi has donated essential water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) items worth K5 million to Mangochi District Health Office to promote hygiene in displacement camps in the district.

Speaking during the symbolic handover on Wednesday at Mangochi District Hospital, Care Malawi project manager Chimwemwe Gremu said they decided to support the survivors to enhance their sanitation in the camps.

“These Wash items have come about because of the floods which has affected the district,” he said.

Gremu said the organisation is implementing the Malawi Drought Response (Echo) Project in Chowe, Chiunda, Namabvi and Makanjira area. The project targets to serve 3 000 households.

“Due to this, we will also distribute cash amounting to K92 500 to selected flood survivors,” he said.

Mangochi district environmental health officer Chimwemwe Jella said the donation will improve the conditions in the camps.

The European Union Humanitarian Aid funded the exercise.

The items, which include chlorine and soap, will benefit people who were displaced by floods that hit he district three weeks ago.
