Police to‘probe’ officers on gate fraud

Police say it will investigate its officers suspected to have been receiving cash to let people in during Sunday’s FDH Premiership Blantyre derby between Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Bullets at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

A video clip that went viral on social media shows a suspected officer collecting money from some fans to gain entry into the stadium through a damaged security fence as a colleague cleared the way for smooth entry.

The clip further shows one of the alleged officers preventing some children because they did not have cash.

In an interview yesterday, Central West Region police spokesperson Foster Benjamin said the issue will be investigated by authorities.

“It is unfortunate that such a thing happened because it tarnishes the image of the police, but what I can say is that when it gets to this point, such matters are handled by authorities,” he said.

The latest episode of the Blantyre derby grossed K90.8 million which some stakeholders said did not reflect   the turnout.

Super League of Malawi treasurer Ali Mwachande said considering the big crowd, the gross should have been around K150 million.

“The biggest challenge we faced was that some fans forced their way in and there were also some fraudsters who were selling parallel tickets.  The police also let us down big time,” he said.

Bullets acting chief executive officer Albert Chigoga said: “This [gross revenue] is a big joke. It is disastrous! I have never witnessed shambolic gate management in many tears like it was on Sunday.”
