Presidential Charity Golf Tournament chairperson Gift Gondwe says they have so far raised K200 million towards the tournament slated for next month, representing half the K400 million target.

The annual tournament raises funds for needy students and Cyclone Freddy survivors.

The news comes after First Capital Bank announced a K100 million contribution towards the event at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Wednesday, making the bank a diamond sponsor for the tournament.

In an interview yesterday, Gondwe said this year, they are targeting to raise K400 million, a rise from last year’s K250 million target.

Jazza: Nature can devastate communities

He said: “So far, K200 million has been raised and we are optimistic of reaching the K400 million target. FCB has contributed K100 million, FDH Bank K10 million, TNM K10 million and other organisations and companies whose names will be made public later.

“As the tournament hosts and Golf Union of Malawi [GUoM], we are very happy and excited with the overwhelming support we have received towards the event. This shows the trust the organisations have towards us and we will ensure the tournament is a success.”

Gondwe, who is also GUoM president, said this year’s target has risen because last year they were only looking at supporting needy students while this year they have included victims of Cyclone Freddy.

Speaking on the  contribution, FCB  chief executive officer Agness Jazza said as a good corporate citizen, they felt duty-bound to complement government’s efforts in the areas of education, health, and sports, which are their key focus areas for corporate social responsibility.

She said as a bank they understand that sometimes nature’s wrath can devastate entire communities.

Said Jazza: “I recall sombrely, the devastation caused recently by Tropical Cyclone Freddy and the havoc wreaked on the lives of so many. FCB donated K100 million and launched a relief drive to provide immediate aid and assistance to the victims.

“And again we proudly announce our sponsorship for the Presidential Golf charity initiative, we do so with a sense of duty and purpose. We pledged K100 million to support underprivileged students and victims of the tropical cyclone. This donation represents not just a financial contribution, but a symbol of our enduring commitment to the well-being of our communities.”

She added that over the past years, the bank has supported over 500 students with scholarships.

Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera has hailed FCB for the K100 million support.
