Lost to independent candidate: Jumbe

The paradox of wishing to be elected Malawi’s president has reared its ugly joke on Friday Jumbe, George Nnensa and Hellen Singh who have failed even to convince their respective constituents to win a parliamentary seat.

Apart from John Chisi, Kamuzu Chibambo and incumbent President Joyce Banda, the other nine presidential hopefuls in the May 20 Tripartite Elections also contested for parliamentary seats.

While the others won the parliamentary race, Tisintha Alliance’s Nnensa, Singh of United Independent Party (UIP) and Jumbe of New Labour Party (NLP) failed to get the much needed support from home.

Singh, who was contesting for Ntcheu Bwanje South Constituency, lost to Goodwin Kanjere of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).  Jumbe, who was contesting for Chiradzulu Central, lost to an independent Mohammed Hanif Osman. Both Jumbe and Singh also lost their seats during the 2009 elections.

Nnensa, on the other hand, has lost his Balaka South East seat to newcomer, Frank Mapondo of DPP.

Among the running mates of the four major parties, it is only Richard Msowoya of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) who has made it. He reclaimed the Karonga Nyungwe seat he lost in 2009 to Khwauli Msiska of Alliance for Democracy (Aford).

DPP’s Saulosi Chilima did not contest.

Sosten Gwengwe of People’s Party (PP) and United Democratic Front’s (UDF) Godfrey Chapola contested and lost.
