Ministry of Education has announced that a record 8 552 students have been selected to the country’s six public universities following selection results for 2022/23 year.

In a statement yesterday signed by the ministry’s Principal Secretary Chikondano Mussa, it said the number of selected students represents a 14.4 percent increase from last year’s 7 473 students. However, the selection has left around 10 000 eligible students as over 18 000 were eligible.

Mussa: It is an increase

Reads the statement in part: “A total of 19 760 applications were received by NCHE [National Council of Higher Education], of whom 18 471 were eligible… A total of 8 552 [5 106 males and 3 446 females] were selected. This represents a gender parity of 59.7 percent male and 40.3 percent female.”

The ministry further indicated that the selection, administered by NCHE, was on merit basis.

Further, the ministry said the number of selected students could swell further as learners of special needs have not yet been included.

Reads the statement: “The final figure for 2023 selection will be higher when special needs students and students selected through other modes such as Open Distance eLearning and Mature Entry.

“Special needs students are currently under consideration by the universities, a process that involves medical examination. These are automatically admitted as long as they meet the minimum entry requirement of six [6] credits including English.”

The students have been selected to Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, Malawi University of Science and Technology, Mzuzu University and the University of Malawi.
