Red Cross invests K41m in hunger fight

The Malawi Red Cross Society on Friday launched a K41 million food insecurity crisis response programme targeting 550 families in Ntcheu District.

Speaking at the launch of the three-month programme, Red Cross president Innocent Majiya said the initiative follows findings by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (Mvac) report that about 3.8 million people will be food insecure in the 2022/2023 lean period.

He said through the programme each beneficiary sub Traditional Authorities Tsikulamowa and Makwangwala in the district is receiving K25 000 per month from January, to March.

Said Majiya: “This in complementing government’s effort of ensuring assistance to those in acute shortage of food supply.”

Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma) deputy director of response and recovery Fyawupi Mwafongo hailed Red Cross for supporting the efforts.

Dodma has distributed either relief maize or cash transfers to 27 districts councils and four cities affected by hunger since October 2022.

The Red Cross programme is being funded by the Swiss Red Cross.
