Red Lions beat Zomba Utd in Aids trophy

Red Lions FC beat Zomba United 3-0 in a match organised by Zomba City Council to commemorate World Aids Day at Zomba Community Centre ground on Sunday.

Willard John produced an inspirational display when he scored a brace for his side. He broke free on the right and released a harmless looking cross which United’s goalkeeper Francis Mwambo fumbled into his own goal.

A few minutes later Edwin Ng’oma made it 2-0 with a classic free-kick. He lobbed the ball over the human wall, giving Mwambo no chance. The soldiers, who fielded almost their first XI, led 2-0 at half-time.

John added the third following a well-worked one-two situation between Kumbukani Mwambene and Moses Nankumba. United made some futile attempts at Lions’ goal through Emmanuel Kamowa and diminutive Luka Magaleta.

For their feat, Red Lions received K80 000 (about $200) and a trophy whereas Zomba United got K40 000 (about $100).

Speaking before prize presentation, Chancellor College principal Professor Chris Kamlongera, who was the guest of honour, appealed for continued support for those affected and infected with the virus.

“It is time people of Zomba have to fight stigma and discrimination at all levels and help to reduce HIV infections. We have heard from the district Aids coordinating committee that Zomba has about 15 percent prevalence rate which is way above that of national level,” said Kamlongera.

In her remarks, Zomba City Aids coordinating committee chairperson Munila Adbullah said she was impressed that the committee used football to reach out to as many people as possible.
