Report says Mangochi District now peaceful

A Conflict Barometer survey conducted in Mangochi has established that there is peaceful co-existence between ethno-religious and political groups in the district.

Professor Kennedy Machira of Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) conducted the survey in 2023 under a Peace Building Project that the Centre for Social Concern (CfSC) is implementing in Mangochi.

The professor carried out the research in nine traditional authorities (T/As), namely Chowe, Mponda, Jalasi, Chimwala, Nankumba, Bwananyambi, Katuli, Namabvi and Makanjira.

Presenting the consolidated report in the district on Tuesday, Machira attributed the situation to reduction of conflicts, peaceful co-existence, tolerance, mutual respect and understanding of each other’s beliefs, among others.

“Intra-religious and inter-religious tensions along with political violence have been the primary drivers of conflicts in the district over the years, but not anymore. These vices have been curtailed,” he said.

Machira said of the nine areas, T/A Namabvi has made significant progress in maintaining peace compared with other areas.

He, however, singled out T/A Nankumba as being at risk of imminent conflict if no preventive measures are taken.

He, therefore, recommended the need for empowerment programmmes targeting youths to discourage their involvement in violent activities.

Mangochi District Council administrator Vinace Malema Juma thanked CfSC for conducting the study, saying it provided the council with insights into areas that need interventions. CfSC executive director James Ngahy said the outcome was a true reflection of things on the ground
