Speaking on Thursday after touring the project, he said everything was going on well based on what he saw.

Said Chikankheni: “We have observed that the contractor has considered drainage as well.

“We are also impressed with the higher specifications of the asphalt as its thickness is about 40 millimetres which is good for the road.”

He commended Mangochi Municipal Council officials for ensuring that the contractor adheres to standards.

Chikankheni pledged that the RFA will continue supporting the municipality to construct other roads to facilitate development in Mangochi Town.

Mangochi Municipal Council chief executive officer Ernest Kadzokoya thanked the administration for the project, saying it will face-lift the municipality.

“On our part, we will demolish illegal structures and create order to help develop the town,” he said.

Taxi operator Imran Adan said the section under construction is important because it connects to facilities such as Mangochi Bus Depot and markets.

“We always struggle with our customers. They ask us to drop them at the depot, but we refuse because the road network has been in a bad shape,” he said.

RFA is funding the rehabilitation of the 850- metre stretch to the tune of about K1.2 billion.

Meanwhile, the Roads Fund has announced that Mangochi and Kasungu municipalities as well as Karonga District Council will receive K1 billion each for similar projects while Zomba and Mzuzu city councils will get K2 billion each.

However, Blantyre and Lilongwe city councils will receive K4 billion each for rehabilitating roads.
