World Vision Malawi water, sanitation and hygiene for everyone project manager for Chiradzulu Panganani Njolomole says they are promoting access to safe water in the district.

He said this on Friday after touring communities to appreciate the impact of the project which is being implemented in partnership with Water for People.

Said Njolomole: “We are impressed with the progress and we are looking forward to helping more districts through the project but also help the government to achieve its long-term development strategy, Malawi 2063 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal Number Six.”

He said they want to achieve 100 percent provision of potable water in Chiradzulu by the end of this year by installing four additional water systems and drilling 45 boreholes.

“We have made progress in terms of water supply because since we started the project, we have installed 19 water systems with 610 taps and through these water systems, we have reached over 26 000 people. We also drilled 177 boreholes and rehabilitated 104,” said Njolomole.

Chiradzulu district commissioner Francis Matewele thanked World Vision Malawi and Water for People for the project, saying it has complemented the government’s efforts to improve access to safe water.

Senior Chief Chitera said the initiative will improve hygiene in her area.

“Clean water will help us prevent waterborne diseases,” she said.

The project is being implemented to the tune of $10 million (about K17.5 billion) to ensure that everyone in Chiradzulu has access to improved water and sanitation by 2024.
