Roots FC are the current favourites to win the K1.5 million ($375) J & J Thyolo District Football League (TDFL) as they top the chart with 72 points from 28 games.

With a few games before they wrap up the league, Roots have a three-point lead as well as a game in hand. Breathing down their necks are Masikini, on 69 points.

At the weekend, Roots thumped Hardknockers 4-1 in their pursuit for the K400 000 (about $1 000) winners’ purse. Runners-up will get K200 000 (about $500) while the third-placed team will receive K100 000 (about $250).

Luchenza Tea Stars Youth are third on 66 points from 30 games whereas Thyolo Eagles are fourth on 62 points from 30 games. Group Five are fifth with 32 points from 61 games.

The leading scorer is Roots’ talisman Harvey Kachala who has scored 41 goals. He is tipped to clinch the award which goes with K10 000 (about $25).

TDFL chairperson Chabvi Mbewe said they are impressed with how the league has run so far.

“So far, so good. Everything has gone on smoothly and we are hoping to end on a good note.

“However, I would like to appeal to government and other organisations to consider giving J & J Construction business here in Thyolo as a token of appreciation for the role they are playing to develop football in the country through the sponsorship. Thyolo is one of the few districts in the region that enjoys league sponsorship,” said Mbewe.
