Rotary Clubs hand over school blocks in Lilongwe

People in Traditional Authority Mbwatalika in Lilongwe District have commended the Rotary Club of Lilongwe and the Rotary Club of Northampton Becket from England for constructing two school blocks valued at K19 million (£8 000) at Chitipi Primary School.

Speaking on Monday during the handover of the facility, Margaret Makwasa, a parent of a Standard Four learner, said the new facilities will motivate children to attend school.

“I urge my fellow parents, community members and traditional leaders to encourage children to go to school and help take care of the two school blocks,” she said.

Chitipi Primary School deputy head teacher Manuel Chipasula thanked the Rotary Clubs for the initiative.

“Since the Rotarians started supporting us with classroom blocks, the number has now risen to over 1 400,” he said.

Chipasula further appealed for additional assistance, particularly in the provision of desks, saying although they are happy with the donation of school blocks, many learners still sit on the floor.

Rotary Club of Lilongwe president Robert Chikuse said they build the blocks after noting that many pupils were learning under trees.

He said they started supporting the school in 2011 and to date, they have constructed 10 classroom blocks at the school.

A Standard Six learner Hastings Soko said the new classroom blocks will help reduce congestion.
