Saboteurs on the prawl

Listen to this article

Malawians, including those holding demonstrations to force the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director general Martha Chizuma to resign from her job, are unpatriotic, saboteurs, greedy and evil.

They are unpatriotic because they don’t wish this country—now buckling on its knees because of rampant corruption in high places—well. They are saboteurs because they are scheming to paralyse government’s systems and structures set up to fight graft in the country. They are greedy because they want only a few selfish and heartless people and plunderers of the public purse, to enjoy what we all sweat for. They derive gratification from the little that their masters put in their pockets unbeknown to them that what they are paid for doing the dirty work are actually crumbs. It is the big thieves who eat the real money. And this is money that is meant to build hospitals, buy medicines, construct roads, school blocks, teaching and learning materials, finance water supply projects, to mention but a few of the activities that our taxes do.

They are evil because they are serving the interests of a few ignoble minds who do not wish this country well. All that these villains are interested in is how much the taxpayer has put in the kitty for them to take out.

Now to end all this, President Lazarus Chakwera appointed Chizuma as ACB director general because, in his own words, “she is a fighter”. And to this end, Chakwera has further pledged: “I have always defended my choice for her for the role, and I’m doing the same now.”

This is the pledge and assurance we have from the country’s First Citizen, and the most powerful person in the country. But sometimes you wonder how with such a promise from the President you still have people in his government who are behind schemes that sabotage his programmes. How come that some elements in his government are bent on undoing his well-meaning intentions? And how come he is not taking action against them? This is why last week I said we should be wary of political double-speaking. Is the President honest when he says he will defend and support Chizuma all the way in the fight against corruption?

For if that were the case, would the President not have wanted that crook who recorded and then leaked the audio, investigated and known? And make him face the long arm of the law. Why is the President silent on such issues? As leader of this country, it is incumbent upon him to ensure justice flows like water at all times. But what is happening to Chizuma, is that despite the President making public pronouncements that he will defend his choice of her, there is absolutely nothing beyond words to support that statement.

The development is not only worrying; it is also a backstabber on his good intentions to rid this country of crooks and thieves who steal our money in mafia style and in broad day light.

Those who hold demonstrations to force Chizuma out of the ACB are working for crooks and thieves. They are in league with diabolical minds. They will not help the Tonse Alliance administration fulfill its promises of clearing the rubble and making Malawi wa tonse become a reality. The sooner the President acts to show that he will not shield anyone bent on sabotaging his plans, the better for his political future.

Those against Chizuma should also know that she is in that position by the will and power of the people. They unanimously ‘elected’ her into that position after the Parliamentary Public Appointments Committee rejected her. Forcing her to resign is courting the people’s anger. Holding demonstrations does not solve problems. Yesterday it might have been those who want Chizuma to resign. The other day it will be the pro-Chizuma group on the streets. Demonstrations suffocate the economy. The choice is yours Mr. President and your Tonse partners.
