Scorchers to be allocated plots tomorrow

Listen to this article

The Scorchers are tomorrow scheduled to be allocated plots which President Lazarus Chakwera promised them as a reward for winning the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship.

In October last year, the President offered members of the Malawi National Women’s Football Team 35 metres by 25 metres pieces of land each in Area 45 near Likuni  Roundabout in Lilongwe for their feat.

But a letter from Malawi National Council of Sports, dated April 15 2024 addressed to the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), states that the Scorchers will be allocated the plots in Area 51.

Made the pledge: Chakwera

Part of the letter signed by Sports Council chief executive officer Henry Kamata reads:  “The Ministry of Youth and Sports kindly requests the Football Association of Malawi to facilitate the attendance of the Scorchers in Lilongwe on Friday, 19th April, 2024 to an event of allocating plots as pledged by the government.

“The meeting will commence at 8.30am at Area 51 and Scorchers are advised to wear tracksuits during the meeting.”

Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale confirmed the event in an interview yesterday.

“That is indeed true and come Friday, the girls will be allocated the plots as promised by the Head of State.”

Mwale attributed the delay in the process to technicalities.

He said: “There were some technicalities that needed to be addressed which included waiving the development fee and that means they will not pay anything.

“That said, everything has been sorted out.”

Apart from the pieces of land, the President also gave the Scorchers K1.5 million each as a token of appreciation for a job well done.

The Scorchers won the regional  tournament for the first time after beating Zambia’s Copper Queens 2-1.

To put an icing on the cake, the Scorchers star forward Temwa Chawinga was named Player of the Tournament and also won the golden boot with nine goals.
