Scottish citizens under Boys Brigade and Galson Church have donated 679 textbooks worth K1.2 million to Nkhwazi Primary School in Likoma District.

The donation follows reports of shortage of learners’ textbooks in most schools in the island district.

Speaking during the donation on Thursday, the group’s representative Charles Chilambula said they appreciate challenges learners experience; hence, the intervention.

“We understand five learners share one textbook, which is not proper when we talk of the set rules of social distancing in the wake of Covid-19,” he said.

The school’s head teacher Tauzi Tanford thanked the Scottish citizens for the textbooks, saying they were facing a shortage of textbooks for Standard One up to Standard Eight.

In his remarks, Likoma acting district education manager Margaret Chinthiti said the district has a shortage of learning and teaching materials.

She said the situation exerts pressure on the book/pupil ratio in class.

The books cover various subjects and included teachers’ guides for Standard One up to Standard Eight.
