Seattle gets ‘Lissy Blue Heart’ cinema feel

The highly anticipated Malawian feature film Lissy Blue Heart made its historic US debut last Friday, drawing an enthusiastic audience of 150 to a special screening in Seattle.

Hosted by the Malawi Seattle Association (MSA), the premiere became a major cultural gathering for the diaspora community. The screening drew local Washington residents as well as dedicated fans who travelled from out of State specifically to witness the Mushroom Shade television series spin-off on the big screen.

The two-hour drama resonated deeply with the audience. Attendees reacted with constant applause throughout the screening, captivated by the intense relational drama surrounding the titular character Lissy, played by Cynthia Zonde Zulu and her relationship with Walezi played by Bucci Mwale.

Speaking before the start of the movie, MSA president Wezi Longwe emphasised the organisation’s dedication to keeping Malawian heritage alive in the region.

She said MSA is actively exploring new avenues to collaborate and partner with filmmakers back home to ensure a steady, reliable flow of Malawian movie premieres in the Pacific Northwest.

“What is important for us is the preservation and promotion of Malawian culture through telling of our own stories in our own voice and in plots and settings that are relatable,” said Longwe.

The event marked a growing tradition of bringing top-tier Malawian cinema to the area. Lissy Blue Heart is the second movie directed by Chaz to be hosted by the MSA, following the organisation’s successful past premiere of his acclaimed film, Misnomer.

The ongoing collaboration highlights the association’s commitment to promoting cinematic work and bridging the gap between Malawi’s film industry and its global audience.

Following the credits, guests shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, expressing immense satisfaction with both the narrative depth and the film’s technical execution.

The audience specifically highlighted the high quality picture and sound, noting that the production standards represent a significant milestone for Malawian cinema.

Following its successful star-studded launches at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe and Apollo Auditorium in Blantyre earlier this year, the Seattle premiere marks a major step forward in bringing contemporary Malawian stories to an international audience.
