He said: “We are excited to partner CRCL in promoting chess which is a mental game. Through this sponsorship, we are developing the brains of the players, who in turn, will bring positive change in our society. This sponsorship has the potential to scale more heights. We are already sponsoring volleyball in the region to the tune of K3 million.”

Zimba has since appealed to CRCL leadership to maintain professionalism to make the tournaments exciting.

On his part, CRCL chairperson Moses Mtumbuka commended Sempha for the gesture.

“What Sempha has done is very commendable. This sponsorship will greatly help the development of chess in the region. It is a great push for us and we are grateful. We promise to be transparent in the way we handle this sponsorship,” he said.

Mtumbuka said apart from open competitions, the sponsorship will also be used to organise college and secondary schools chess tournaments.

“We believe the continuity of the sports lies in having competitions in schools,” he said. n
