Chief Justice (CJ) Rizine Mzikamanda on Friday urged new lawyers that have been admitted to the Malawi Bar to uphold justice and serve people with integrity.

The CJ admitted to the Malawi Bar 21 lawyers at an event in Blantyre, a procedure that signifies that the lawyers are now allowed to practise law in the country.

“I urge you to consider affairs of people as paramount while upholding justice,” Mzikamanda, who was appointed by President Lazarus Chakwera as Chief Justice on January 7 2022, said.

High Court and Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal registrar Gladys Gondwe said this time around the hearings to make the admissions were not split.

She said: “The number was manageable and we were able to comply with Covid-19 protocols for a closed space event with no any challenge.

“This group, although it is the first to be admitted in 2022, was registered in 2021. However, hearing of their petitions could not take place; hence, the Chief Justice saw it fit to hear their petitions quickly.”

One petition relating to re-admission of legal practitioner who was disbarred a few years ago was adjourned to February 7 2022 to allow the Malawi Law Society to file its papers.

During the hearing, State advocate Clement Maulidi represented the Attorney General Thabo Chakaka-Nyirenda while Malawi Law Society was represented by its secretary Chrispin Ngunde.

The newly-admitted legal practitioners will increase the number of licensed lawyers to about 683 from 662 that were on MLS list in 2021.
