Silver celebrate title with parade

Silver Strikers FC yesterday stormed the streets of  Lilongwe  to celebrate their senior team’s TNM Super League triumph and the youth team’s Lilongwe Katswiri  FCB Under-19 League title with a victory parade.

The club’s brand ambassadors musicians Lulu and Malinga Mafia spiced up the event with performances as the convoy moved around the capital city with the trophies on display in an open vehicle.

The parade, which started at Silver Stadium in Area 47, passed  through  City Centre, Mchesi, Area 36, Old Town, Chinsapo, Gateway Mall, Mtandire, Area 49, Area 25 and Area 18, among others.

Some excited fans chanted  and waved at the convoy as it passed by. In some townships such as Mchesi, the convoy was forced to stop briefly as excited fans interacted with the players while dancing to the music.

The club’s self-proclaimed chief supporter King Malaya added colour to the fun with his belly-shaking antics to the amusement of onlookers and fans.

“As supporters, we are very happy. It has been a long time since we had such a parade. It’s good to celebrate with communities in Lilongwe as you know this is where we have a strong base,” he said.

In an interview, Silver Strikers Company Limited chief executive officer Patrick Chimimba said the parade was about celebrating the victories with supporters.

“We wanted to show the trophy to our supporters in Lilongwe just before our players go on holiday,” he said.

“We thought it wise to take the trophy to them [fans] as a way of appreciating their support throughout the season.”

Chimimba said the club’s success was not only restricted to the pitch.

“On the business front, we have been able to court a number of partners such as Mika Greenland and Betway. We have also sold over 4 000 replicas jerseys. We are happy.”

The parade ended in Area 47 where Lulu and Mathumela Band continued to perform as the fans feasted.
