Members of Silver Grey Social Club of Blantyre on Thursday visited Manja Primary School evacuation camp where they donated foodstuffs and utensils worth K500 000 to survivors of Cyclone Freddy that has claimed 499 lives as of Monday.

Speaking during the presentation of the donation on behalf of the club’s chairperson, Gaston Mwenelupembe said they were touched by the devastation Cyclone Freddy caused and decided to help in their small possible way.

He said: “In situations of disasters, there are some who take advantage and start stealing the donations; that is callous. People of goodwill want to see these people survive this situation.”

Mwenelupembe said what Silver Grey Social Club noticed was that donations were concentrated to easy-to-reach places such as Manja Primary and St. Pius Parish Hall and the primary school, suggesting to the authorities involved in overseeing the donations to distribute equitably to the rest of the camps.

In a separate interview on Thursday, Blantyre District Council chairperson Akima Chipwatali expressed concern that well-wishers are focusing more on Blantyre City, leaving other survivors in Blatyre Rural in need of food assistance.n
