Silver Strikers yesterday reclaimed the top position in the TNM Super League after thrashing Karonga United 4-0 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

A Patrick Macheso hat-trick and one goal from Mark Fodya were enough to propel Silver back to the summit of the table, displacing FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in the process.

The victory yesterday has given the Central Bankers a three-point buffer on 24 points while Bullets, who were held by Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe, are second on 21 points from 10 games.

Silver dominated possession, especially in the midfield where  Zebron Kalima, Chimwemwe Idana, Emmanuel Kaunga, Maxwell Paipi and Tatenda M’balaka controlled the pace of the game.

Stain Davie provided the assist through a split pass for Macheso to lob the ball over Lloyd Munthali in the 33rd minute.

Macheso doubled the lead just a minute into the second-half from another Davie assist.

The striker then completed a hat-trick in the 73rd before he was replaced by Chinsinsi Maonga in the 78th minute to a round of applause from the Bankers supporters.

But Silver were not yet done and Fodya rounded off Muhara to bury the ball into the empty net with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Silver coach Pieter de Jongh in post-match interview said he was happy with the superior performance.

‘We are on the right track and I am proud of the whole performance. We could have scored six or seven goals. I am also happy with how my players showed up. We need to continue working hard and making good use of our chances.”

Karonga United coach Luka Milanzie admitted playing second fiddle to Silver.

“Unlike in other games we have lost, today we failed to create chances. That’s what is worrisome. In other games, we created so many chances but failed to score but today Silver played well and we were shut out. But we have more games coming and we can move out from the danger,” he said.

In Blantyre Mighty Mukuru Wanderers were held to a one-all draw by Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar at Kamuzu Stadium to remain third on the log table with 18 points.

Extreme FC, who lost 1-0  to Ekwendeni Hammers, are bottom of the log table.
